Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced on Monday that Israel has accepted a ceasefire framework proposed by US President Donald Trump.
Addressing a joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart in Budapest, Saar said Israel was prepared to move forward with a “full deal” that would end the war. He added that the agreement would only be possible if it included the release of all hostages and a commitment from Hamas to lay down its arms.
The announcement came hours after Israel issued a stern warning to Hamas, threatening massive retaliation unless hostages were freed and weapons surrendered. Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened to launch a "mighty hurricane" of strikes that would hit Gaza if Hamas failed to comply.
The Israeli statement comes after a response from Hamas, which had indicated that it was willing to engage in negotiations. Hamas said it was prepared to "immediately sit at the negotiating table" after Trump unveiled his latest proposal, which he called a "last warning" to Hamas.
In its official statement, Hamas said it was open to discuss the release of hostages but tied it to broader conditions. The group demanded "a clear declaration to end the war, a total withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the creation of a committee of independent Palestinians to run the Gaza Strip."
"Hamas welcomes any move that helps the efforts to stop the aggression against our people," the group said. It confirmed that it had received "some ideas from the American side aimed at reaching a ceasefire" and added that it was in “constant contact with mediators to turn these ideas into a comprehensive agreement that meets our demands."
