Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam on Monday were handed seven years’ imprisonment by a Special MP-MLA Court in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, after being found guilty in a case involving two PAN cards.
The complaint was lodged in December 2019 by BJP MLA Akash Saxena at the Civil Lines Police Station in Rampur. He alleged that both father and son possessed two separate PAN cards, each carrying different dates of birth.
According to Saxena, the duo had secured the cards using falsified documents and had used them for banking operations and tax-related purposes.
This conviction comes just weeks after a different court cleared Azam Khan in a separate matter. Earlier this month, he was acquitted in a case that accused him of inciting enmity, misusing an official government letterhead and seal, and making defamatory remarks against the BJP, the RSS, and prominent Shia cleric Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Naqvi.
The court had observed that the alleged incident dated back to 2014, while the FIR was lodged only in 2019, placing it beyond the permissible time limit under Section 468 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
According to the prosecution, the FIR—filed at Hazratganj Police Station on 1 February 2019—claimed that Khan had abused his ministerial office to circulate defamatory statements aimed at harming the public image of the BJP, RSS, and Naqvi both nationally and internationally. It was further alleged that the complaint had initially been suppressed due to political influence.
