Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised police actions against Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protesters in New Delhi on Tuesday, stating that the youth involved have a “genuine problem” and that their future is at risk.
Addressing reporters, Priyanka Gandhi highlighted the sacrifices made by students and their families in pursuit of better opportunities, asserting they deserve to be heard. She said, “I think this is absolutely disgusting. These are young people; they have a genuine problem. We all know what that problem is. Every time they spend money, their parents take loans for them. They struggle, they have to go to coaching centres, and they face immense hardships because they want a bright future. They see a possibility for that future, and you are just destroying it.”
She described the issue as longstanding, adding, “It is a very deep problem. This problem has been there for many years, and we have been talking about it for years.”
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi also supported the party’s position, which criticised police conduct during Monday’s student protests. When questioned about the police response to the protest march on July 20, she said, “The Congress party has already spoken about it.”
Congress MP Manish Tewari expressed solidarity with the protesting students amid ongoing demonstrations concerning the NEET-UG 2026 exam paper leak. On social media platform X, he wrote: “In the shadow of struggles, true freedom takes root; history turns that way, where youth marches on. Sangharshon ke saaye mein asli aazadi palti hai, Itihas udhar mud jata hai, jis or jawani chalti hai!” He added, “Agitated students, strong nation.”
Tewari’s statement coincided with intensified protests by the CJP demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak.
The Opposition has increased criticism of the government following police action during the protest march towards Parliament on July 20. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut proposed observing July 20 as “Coward Day,” while Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra shared a photograph of the confrontation between police and protesters, commenting, “World’s largest democracy–take that!”
Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk remains under medical care at Safdarjung Hospital, monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. The latest hospital bulletin stated that his vital parameters are stable, though his blood sugar remains low and serum potassium is at 3.2 mEq/L.
The hospital noted that Wangchuk was receiving oral rehydration therapy and potassium supplementation but continued to refuse intravenous fluids and glucose despite medical advice. Wangchuk, who had been conducting a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of the Education Minister over the NEET exam paper leak, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on July 18.
