Madhya Pradesh assembly passes UCC Bill amid protest by Congress MLAs

Bhopal: Amid a noisy protest by the Opposition Congress, the Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly on Tuesday passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill by a voice vote.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who introduced the bill in the House, said a “golden history” was being written in the assembly but the Congress was missing the opportunity owing to its appeasement politics and terming it anti-tribal.
Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Umang Singhar, on the other hand, supported party MLA Arif Masood’s demand that the Bill be sent to a select committee for discussion.
Instead of passing the UCC Bill, the BJP government should implement a 27 percent reservation for the OBC community, he said.
After Yadav completed his speech, Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar asked Technical Education and Skill Development Minister Gautam Tetval to move the bill for passing through voice vote.
The bill was passed even as Opposition MLAs continued their protest in the well of the House.
