Growing lawlessness in Delhi: Rahul Gandhi after Manipur music teacher beaten to death

In the wake of the death of a Manipuri music teacher, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Delhi Police over what he called “growing lawlessness” against people from the Northeast in the capital.
In the early hours of Monday, 54-year-old Vikram Singh objected to delivery workers and dhaba staff making loud noise and drinking outside his home, triggering a dispute and a subsequent assault.
Singh sustained serious injuries in the attack and was rushed to a hospital, but died during treatment.
Condemning the incident, the Congress leader said in a post on X, “A father, killed outside his own home, in his own country's capital. After many such incidents, every Northeast family in Delhi is asking the same question today - are we safe here?"
He then went on to question the Union Home Minister and the Delhi Police over the "growing lawlessness, especially against people from the Northeast", while calling for a swift investigation and said those responsible must be brought to justice.
In connection to the fatal attack, the police have arrested seven men and detained a juvenile.
WE WANT JUSTICE
Speaking to reporters, Singh's relative demanded justice and described the attack as "brutal", leaving the musician even unable to move.
The relative said the family rushed him to hospital, where doctors found his condition extremely critical. Despite repeated attempts at CPR, his blood circulation and heart function deteriorated, and he died shortly thereafter.
She said police had obtained CCTV footage of the incident and expressed hope that the footage would help establish the identities and roles of those involved.
“We repeatedly urge the administration to turn the injustice inflicted upon us, upon the people of the Northeast, into justice. We want justice. We are citizens of India; we want freedom from such brutal assaults and the racism we face."
Northeastern activist Sangeeta Devi also demanded justice for Singh and said attention must now turn to the future of his family.
The North East Students Society, Delhi University (NESSDU), condoled Singh's death and described him as a respected Manipuri musician. The students' body called the incident a “senseless act of violence” and demanded a swift, fair and thorough investigation.
CHIEF MINISTERS CONDEMN INCIDENT
Manipur Chief Minister Khemchand Yumnam expressed deep sadness over Singh's death and remembered him for his contribution to music and the cultural life of Manipur.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray for strength and solace to help them bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said he was disturbed by the assault that led to the musician's death and said the incident had once again reopened “the painful wounds of atrocities faced by people from the North East in the capital.”
Sangma called upon the authorities and the Delhi Police to ensure that those responsible face the strictest consequences.
