Iran says US return to Islamabad Memorandum key to normalizing Strait of Hormuz

Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the way to restore normal conditions in the Strait of Hormuz is for the United States to return to and honor its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding with Iran.
Araghchi made the remarks during a phone conversation with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday, during which they discussed bilateral ties and the latest regional and international developments.
The Iranian diplomat said the current tensions in the region stem from the US’s “regrettable violation” of its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum, stressing that Washington’s return to its obligations and adherence to its commitments would pave the way for restoring normal conditions.
Araghchi also said Iran and Oman had made significant progress in talks on establishing a temporary transit route through the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed the continuation of consultations between the two countries on mechanisms for managing the strategic waterway in the future.
Motegi expressed concern over rising regional tensions and called for continued diplomatic consultations to ensure security and safe passage through the strait.
