Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said the Islamic Republic is working to remove obstacles to Iran’s membership in the BRICS New Development Bank, while highlighting the growing global focus on using national currencies.
Speaking with national television on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Saturday, the foreign minister said existing obstacles to joining the BRICS New Development Bank would be addressed during the visit to India.
He added that Iran views BRICS as an important platform for expanding economic and financial cooperation and deepening ties among participating countries.
Araghchi also underscored the importance of strengthening economic cooperation among BRICS members and promoting the use of national currencies in trade.
The minister described the BRICS summit as important, noting that discussions on national currencies at the BRICS Business Council had attracted significant international attention.
He said the main BRICS summit was beginning, alongside a series of bilateral meetings involving President Masoud Pezeshkian. Araghchi said the president had held productive talks with Indian, Malaysian and Ethiopian heads of state.
According to Araghchi, bilateral and regional issues would feature prominently in these meetings. He emphasized Iran’s expanding relations with Muslim and regional countries, saying this trend was evident throughout the president’s diplomatic engagements.
