European Council President Rejects Trump’s Call to Withdraw from International Courts

European Council President Charles Michel has reiterated his strong backing for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in their role of defending international law. Speaking at the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations, Michel stated that there is no room for double standards in international law, and the world is witnessing deliberate violations of legal principles.
Michel affirmed a resolute commitment to supporting these international courts, safeguarding their independence, integrity, and their capacity to fully execute their duties. He implicitly addressed threats against international institutions and calls for European withdrawal, declaring that threats or attacks against the ICC, its officials, and personnel are unacceptable. Accountability, he stressed, cannot be subject to political considerations or expediency.
The United States has previously imposed sanctions on over a dozen current and former ICC officials, including half of its current judges. Washington’s actions were a response to the court’s investigations into American and Israeli officials and the issuance of an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of the Zionist regime. Notably, neither the United States nor the Zionist regime are members of the International Criminal Court.
