NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that the women's reservation bill is great but its fine print suggests that caste census and delimitation need to be done before that.
While addressing the media, Rahul slammed the Centre and said that it's a distraction and diversion tactic from the OBC quota and nobody knows if this will even be implemented.
"The truth is that 33 per cent reservation can be given to women in Parliament and state assemblies today itself, it's not a complicated matter. The government has presented this before the country but it will be implemented 10 years from now. Nobody knows if this will even be implemented," he added.
" I spoke of one institution in Parliament, that which runs the government of India - Cabinet secretary and secretaries...I asked why only three out of 90 people belong to the OBC community?...I don't understand that PM Modi speaks of OBCs every day but what did he do for them?" Rahul asked.
The Congress said delimitation and census were "poor excuses" for the postponement of the women's quota and alleged that the entire exercise was to create an election issue, without actually implementing it.
The opposition party also dubbed the bill as a "teasing illusion".
The bill to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women received the parliamentary nod on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha unanimously voted in its favour.
