Dr Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, arrived in India on Wednesday for a two-day official visit to co-chair the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between the two countries. This marks his first visit to India since taking office in August 2024.
The high-level meeting, scheduled from May 7 to 8, is being held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty. It aims to review key bilateral matters and discuss ways to deepen cooperation across political, economic, and strategic domains.
Dr Araghchi’s visit comes at a sensitive time, as regional tensions escalate in the wake of a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. In a notable development earlier this week, the Iranian Foreign Minister met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, underscoring Tehran’s diplomatic engagements in the subcontinent.
The outcomes of the Joint Commission Meeting are expected to shape the trajectory of India-Iran ties in the coming months, with both sides emphasising shared interests and regional stability.
During his visit, Araghchi will hold a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at Hyderabad House on May 8. Later in the day, he will meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
On April 25, the Iranian Foreign Minister had given a call for peace to prevail in the neighbourhood in a post on X. He had shared that Tehran stands "ready" to put its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to use for forging a "greater understanding at this difficult time".
