Former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says US-linked armed groups have killed hundreds of starving Palestinian aid seekers, decrying the European Union over its inaction on the crimes committed in Gaza.
“In 1 month, 550 starving Palestinians have been killed by US mercenaries while trying to get food at the points indicated by the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,” Borrell said in a post on social media platform X on Thursday, in reference to the Israeli- and US-backed body that distributes aid in the strip.
“This is horrendous but the EU Commission and EU Council remain unwilling to take any action against these crimes,” he added.
Borrell, who concluded his term as the EU’s top diplomat in 2024, has been a vocal critic of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and has previously called for a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
The GHF has been tasked by the Israeli regime and the US government to distribute aid in Gaza since late May. Its operations, however, have been stymied by chaotic scenes and daily reports of Israeli forces firing on aid seekers waiting to collect rations from GHF installations.
A new report by the Associated Press (AP) on Wednesday detailed how American contractors guarding the aid centers used live ammunition, stun grenades and pepper spray against the Palestinian aid seekers.
The report, the news agency said, is based on testimonies from two American contractors, videos, internal messages and forensic audio analysis.
Both whistleblowers said they came forward due to what they described as “dangerous and irresponsible practices” at sites run by the GHF.
Online responses to the report were immediate and intense, with hundreds condemning the private military contractors and the distribution centers.
“US mercenary criminal-thugs… GHF and the gang are killing machines in ‘humanitarian’ clothing”, one comment on X read.
Another X user called the operation a “sham” masking a “ruthless agenda”.
Others criticized the American news agency for timing of the report, saying it came too late.
“Thanks, AP — five weeks late and 600 people already dead. #breakingnews,” one user wrote.
Another commented, “Palestinians have been warning about this for weeks. Maybe it’s time to listen to the victims of genocide instead of those committing it.”
Israel launched the campaign of genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023. It has killed at least 57,130 Palestinians there so far, according to the health ministry of Gaza.
