The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to furnish details of excluded voters during the Special Intensive Revision exercise in Bihar by October 9.
The apex court order comes a day after the Election Commission announced the schedule for Bihar assembly elections, which is set to begin from November 6.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing the petitions challenging the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar. The court has adjourned the hearing till October 9.
Noting that around 65 lakh deletions were made in the draft list after the SIR and some names were added in the final list, the court asked whether the add-ons are "deleted names or new names".
The EC informed the court that most of the names added in the final list after the publication of the draft list were of new voters. It also said that no complaint or appeal has been filed till now by any excluded voters.
The court asked the poll agency to provide it with details of 3.66 lakh excluded voters from final electoral roll prepared under recently-concluded exercise.
The SC said that everyone has the draft electoral roll and the final list has also been published on September 30, so the required data can be furnished through a comparative analysis.
The Election Commission on September 30 released the final voter rolls for Bihar and excluded 47 lakh names that were on the rolls before the SIR began. Out of the total number, 3.66 lakh were further removed removed after scrutiny found them ineligible.
