Erdogan Clarifies Mecca Agreement: Not Directed Against Any Nation

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asserted on Friday that the Mecca Agreement, a joint defense pact between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, is not directed against Iran, the Israeli regime, or any other nation. Speaking at a press conference, Erdogan dismissed the notion that the agreement should be viewed as an alliance formed to counter Iran, Israel, or any third party.
He elaborated that the pact reflects a shared commitment among the three countries to shape a future characterized by greater security, peace, and prosperity. Erdogan highlighted Ankara’s long-standing support for regional issues to be resolved by the region’s own nations. He emphasized that the agreement’s objectives are to bolster security, enhance deterrence capabilities, and ensure long-term stability.
The Turkish President noted that it would be inaccurate to suggest Turkey would automatically engage in military responses to every incident that might occur in Iraq, Yemen, or elsewhere. The Mecca Agreement is grounded in the right to self-defense, as stipulated in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. It establishes that any armed attack against one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all signatories.
The nature and extent of assistance will be determined based on the request and needs of the country under attack. Such assistance may include intelligence data, logistical support, and munitions. Depending on the threat level, broader military support could also be considered, provided that relevant political and military mechanisms determine the form and formula of assistance through consultation and coordination.
