Farmers at mahapanchayat in Meerut seek dues, fair price for sugarcane

Meerut: Hundreds of farmers from various parts of western Uttar Pradesh, arrived in tractors and trolleys, and held a protest at the Commissioner’s Chowk in Meerut on Tuesday on a call given by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU).
Addressing a farmers’ mahapanchayat, BKU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait raised demands related to electricity supply, availability of fertilisers, payment of pending sugarcane dues and a fair price for sugarcane.
The farmers also raised the issue of loan waivers and sought clarity from the government on the status of the waiver.
They demanded action on the memorandum submitted to the authorities on July 21 and warned that the agitation would be expanded if their demands were not addressed soon.
The protest affected traffic movement at Commissioner’s Chowk and surrounding areas, officials said.
