Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said on Monday that terrorism has taken root in the region and extremism is the major problem of Islamic world today.
In a meeting with his Algerian counterpart, Saeed Buhajjeh on the sidelines of the 13th Conference of Inter-Parliamentary Union of OIC member states (PUIC), he hailed Algeria as a significant country following a positive foreign policy.
It is essential for the two countries to bolster their economic ties in addition to political and security relations, he said, noting that of course, parliaments assume an influential role in this respect, as most of the problems can be solved through their assistance.
Buhajjeh, for his part, said that the conference is a valuable opportunity which should be seized to address challenges in the region.
No doubt such meetings can help promote ties among Muslim states and bring them closer to one another, he said.
“Algeria has always supported Iran’s policies and threw its weight behind the nuclear deal (between Iran and G5+1) considering it helpful for Iran’s progress,” he said.
“We shoulder a significant responsibility and that is helping countries maintain their independence against the arrogant powers,” Algerian official said.
Algeria’s policy is based on solving disputes between countries and not interfering in other countries’ internal affairs and contributing to peace and stability, he said.
Warning about the spread of terrorism in the region, he said that extremist forces pose threat to all countries.
“We should help in uprooting extremist forces which are supported by certain states but we must root them out and promote democracy,” he said.
“When we engaged in a war against terrorists, there was deadly silence in the international organizations,” he said, noting that the threat is still in place, jeopardizing countries such as Libya and Tunisia.
Algeria wishes security for all nations, because if the neighboring states enjoy security, it will also be safe, he said.
